AVIF Volunteers in Kenya: The impact of climate change on development
The impact of climate change on development

A video from Adam Hart Davis in Kenya explains the threat posed by climate change, especially in Africa.
The Up In Smoke reports "follow three previous statements of concern that climate
change due to global warming is already happening, and hitting poor
communities and vulnerable ecosystems".

TakingITGlobal,Canada also have a new initiative. Inspired by many, they have developed the Climate Change Youth Guide to Action, available for download to all, especially schools.
“I am convinced that climate change, and what we do about it, will define us, our era, and ultimately the global legacy we leave for future generations. We hold the future in our hands. Together, we must ensure that our grandchildren will not have to ask why we failed to do the right thing, and let them suffer the consequences.”
-Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations
If 18 year old Catherine Gauthier, of the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition, can stand up and address over 80 Heads of State on 24 September, 2007, at the UN HQ, New York, what can you do to help ?
Download the webcast of her full speech here.

AVIF's wild side
Fundraising and an incredible motorbike safari experience are now available for small groups, beginning Summer 2008 with KENYA ON 2.
Fundraising and a full bike license are pre-requisites but the arduous 2 week challenge promises to provide both an unforgettable trip as well as an opportunity to allocate even more resources e.g. solar technologies & educations, to all our host communities.
(LWD crew arrive in Africa)...as an example :
Day 4: Ngong Hills - Maparasha Hills (150 Km on earth track)
Drive towards Mount Kilimanjaro on a narrow track across the savannah between acacias and anthills. Expect to meet herds of livestock, antelopes or giraffes. End the day at Maparasha hills to pitch-tent. Evening excursion to the top of nearby hills to watch game. Capture the sunset on Kilimanjaro (19950 ft). Retire to the campsite for an African dinner around a wood fire.
Day 5: Maparasha – Loitokitok (190 Km on earth track)
A visit to a local school then drive on an animal trail in the savannah to view Mount Kilimanjaro. Wildlife can be seen all around. Arrive at Kibo Slopes Cottages in Loitokitok, the main Maasai township that sits on the foothills of Kilimanjaro.
Day 6: Kilimanjaro foothills - Lake Jipe (160 Km - earth and stones)
Enjoying the full-view of the mountain, drive towards Tsavo on a red soil trail covered with black volcanic stones. Arrive at the gate of Tsavo-West National Park and load the bikes on a lorry, cross the park by car towards Ziwani gate where the bikes are off-loaded. Head towards Lake Jipe in the Tsavo reserve on a sandy track .. Boat ride on the lake before sunset. Return to the bandas (cottages thatched with coconut palm leaves) right on the lakeshore ...
Take a look on the website and consider your plans are for next Summer.

Kenya On 2
AVIF is attending the incredible LWD Party tomorrow night in Battersea to do some networking and fundraising. Due to the generosity of the sponsors involved, 100% of the ticket price will go to UNICEF and a few smaller charities involved in LWD, so our attendance is already helping a very worthy cause.

A group has been formed on the Facebook medium if you wish to take part or just stay informed.

Ben & Jerrys Climate Change College

Ben &
Jerry's have developed the Climate Change College, and are now accepting applications from 18-30's with ideas
on how to tackle climate change. The prize is a business mentoring
programme (worth €21,000 per student) and a €7,000 monetary grant to
launch a unique project. The programme is largely virtual with a 1-1 mentor, except for a 3 day
workshop in Brussels in February and a two week scientific field trip
to the Arctic in April. All travel is covered by Ben & Jerry’s and
is offset through Cool Your Jets which invests in renewable energy
projects.

Promoting Solar Cooking .. AGAIN & AGAIN
Solar Cooking in Kenya ?
Here's a few reasons why :
- Each group of items in the photo costs 30 Kenyan Shillings (£0.21) as does the pile of charcoal shown. By using a CooKit or other solar cooker, people can buy food instead of fuel.

- Can be built from materials as simple as cardboard, glue, aluminum foil, scrap-metal, and non-toxic black spray-paint
- Fun, clean, convenient, economical, non-polluting
- Uses FREE solar energy
- Can bake, steam, roast, simmer even PASTEURIZE
- Slow, gentle cooking retains more nutrients, giving a wonderful fresh flavour.
- For those that must gather firewood instead of purchasing wood or charcoal, women and girls usually, the time saved can now be used to earn money building and re-selling cookers, even baking cakes for example, or simply returning to school for a better education.
- Less firewood is needed so solar cooking is saving the forests - Forests mean rain, crops, livestock… more money.
- Lack of smoke and soot means improved lung health for cooks and children.
- Benefits of improved health by enabling pasteurization of milk and water.

Meal Party in the Rhonda Slums, Nakuru, Rift Valley, Kenya

Another meal party has been donated and hosted for the children of LLK International. Offices opened a few weeks ago & 2 acres of land will be purchased for the construction of two orphanages (separate houses for girls and boys), a volunteer house, a Kindergarten building and a schoolhouse with school clinic and library – eventually an abandoned baby orphanage house will be added in due time.
